Cuckoos Nest by Nickle Creek from the CD by the same name

This is one of my very favorite photos of Hazer. It was taken the first summer I started herding with him. He so loves herding, which made me very happy. We spent years trying to find his niche. He’s so biddable that he’ll do just about anything you ask, but there’s a huge difference between a dog doing something because they’re being asked and doing something they love to do. Even though he has one ear trained on the sheep, he’s looking back as if to say, “More?” and the joy is written all over his face. This day was extremely hot and I had to force Hazer to take a few breaks. No matter how tired or hot, he just drops things down a notch and keeps going. He’s an amazing herding machine.

We haven’t been herding since last fall. Hazer’s got some spinal fusing that’s starting to show up with too much activity. I’d like to get do a little herding once a month or so, but things here have been kind of busy. Perhaps when the gardens are all planted we’ll get to do a little herding again. When the wind blows just right I can sometimes hear my neighbors goats calling. I know Hazer hears them too and probably wonders why we can’t go investigate. It’s what he was born to do.
